WHAT IS OCIA?

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process where adults are gradually introduced to the Catholic Faith and way of life.  It is a safe place where questions can be asked, concerns broached, and where you can learn what makes the Catholic Faith different from all others.  In OCIA, you will be introduced to important Catholic concepts and explore the rituals and rites that have been in place since they were instituted with the first Christians at the time of Jesus.  It is a time to connect with other people and to develop a loving relationship with God.  There are five stages to OCIA.  In all stages, you will learn facts and information but you will also explore the joy and sense of "completeness" that comes with being a practicing Catholic.

The Stages of OCIA

• Period of Inquiry. This is a time for asking questions and discovering.  At no time is anyone obliged to continue, though attending all the sessions will be most beneficial.

• Period of the Catechumenate. Once a decision is made to pursue baptism or profession of faith as a Catholic (Confirmation), these sessions focus on assisting you develop your faith, on learning catechism, or the basic points about Catholic faith and life.

• Period of Enlightenment and Purification. It is a time of retreat and prayer. A time spent drawing closer to God in preparation for Easter. The Church will help you focus and intensify your faith as you prepare to commit your life to Christ and be received into the Church at Easter. This period typically occurs during Lent.  

• Initiation. The culmination of the whole process! You’re received into the Church during the Easter Vigil Mass, where you’ll receive the sacraments of initiation: baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist. (If you’ve already been baptized, you won’t be baptized again.)

• Period of Mystagogy. (Mystagogy = Interpretation of Mystery.) After reception into the Church at Easter, this period lets you reflect and learn more about the mysteries of the Mass, the Sacraments, and participation in God's call for you. You become a disciple of Christ!
